Teaching public speaking, persuasion, presentation skills and confidence through the art of debate
Marymount University is a beautiful campus nestled right outside of our nation's capitol. The campus was located on the former estate of Admiral Presley Marion Rixey, Naval Surgeon General and personal physician to Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and William McKinley. In October 2010, Marymount celebrated its 60th anniversary with the grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony for Caruthers Hall, an academic facility focused on the sciences and health sciences, and Rose Bente Lee Ostapenko Hall, a residence hall providing apartment-style housing for 239 students.
At Middle School Debate Camp level, students will learn the fundamentals of public speaking and argumentation, enabling them to develop core presentation and debating skills that boost confidence and self-esteem. Students at the High School Debate Camp level will work on effective public speaking and argumentation, allowing them to further advance their presentation and debate skills to prepare them for the real world. The camp offers students the chance to improve their communication skills in a safe and secure environment while having fun! Complete description »

data from 2017 parent survey
Not only will Capitol Debate students learn new skills through our programs; they will feel an increase in self-worth, learn critical thinking skills and improve public speaking and communication skills with their peers. Two weeks at camp will result in lifelong friendships and memories that will resonate with our students throughout their academic, personal and professional careers. Campers return to our program year after year because of how life-changing our Summer Debate Camps prove to be. Our parents will tell you themselves that they proudly stand by their investment in Capitol Debate because of the impact it has had on their families.
It was an amazing experience that I haven't had before coming to this camp and I am grateful that I came and wish (hope) that I come again to maybe pickup new things or just learn to be better.
For the past 2 weeks, I've felt at home. Not only have I learned how to express my opinions without hurting others, but I have gained so many friends through so many great experiences at this camp. I will definitely remember summer 2016 for the rest of my life, it's been great!
In the beginning of camp, I thought that Capital Debate would succeed as being one of the low-points of my summer. However, I was completely wrong. Capitol Debate turned out to be one of the highlights of my summer. I would definitely come back next year, and I would encourage anyone to come.
From the point of view of a parent I would strongly suggest Capitol Debate as a definite option.
As a teacher in a public school, you get to teach a wide variety of students with varying interests and various intelligence. Unfortunately, being “smart” is not “cool” which is short-sighted and naive. At Capitol, it’s embraced and encouraged by the campers and the staff. We need more intelligent, educated young people
My time at capitol debate was incredible, and the quality of teaching and fun was the reason I came back.
I had a blast this year at camp. I came in with very high standards because I had already been here last year and like I said before, these high standards were met and even exceeded. Thank you so much for this great life changing experience.
Debate camp has much to offer the students. The structured program allows the kids to experience a multitude of positive reinforcements on leadership development. The students develop or expound on self confidence, independence and the ability to see both sides of the coin. They learn to defend a position even if it may not be popular and use excellent methods to research material. The educated coaches are supportive and have their own personal experiences to share with the students.
Debate camp really changed my life. It turned my endless rambling into quality speech and overall made me just that much better of a person.
Relationships, experiences, values, skills, challenges - are life lessons that stay with your teen forever. My kids had amazing FUN. They made tons of friends which are long-lasting. They gained skills for a lifetime.
